Virtus & Fingerprinting

Every adult who volunteers at school or at school and parish events must complete the Archdiocese of Los Angeles safe-environment requirements before working with students. There is no charge for either step.

All families also complete mandatory service hours, so it is worth finishing both steps early in the year.

What the Archdiocese requires

  • VIRTUS safe-environment training

    VIRTUS® safe-environment training is mandated by the Archdiocese for all clergy, staff and volunteers. First-time volunteers take the three-hour “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” session.

  • Fingerprinting (Live Scan)

    All clergy, paid parish and school personnel, and volunteers who work regularly in a supervisory role with children or youth must be fingerprinted through the Archdiocese.

  • Guidelines for adults

    Volunteers agree to follow the Archdiocese’s policies and guidelines for interacting with minors, which are published on the Safeguard the Children pages.

  • Keeping it current

    VIRTUS participants keep their certification current through the Archdiocese’s ongoing safe-environment programme — monthly training bulletins and recertification sessions. Check your VIRTUS account for your status.

How to complete VIRTUS

  1. 1Go to virtusonline.org and look for “VIRTUS Online Upcoming Sessions”.
  2. 2Scroll down and choose Los Angeles – San Fernando Region. Classes held at St. Dominic are listed under this region, but you may attend a session in any Los Angeles region.
  3. 3Pick a date and time that works for you. If you have never attended, choose the three-hour “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” session — “Keeping the Promise Alive” sessions are for renewals only.
  4. 4Return to the top of the page and click “Start Registration”. Create a username and password (or sign in), complete the registration, and select your course.

How to get fingerprinted

  1. 1Visit lacatholics.org/fingerprinting for upcoming fingerprinting locations and times.
  2. 2Choose a session and follow the instructions to register. Bring a valid photo ID.
  3. 3Tell the school office once you are cleared so your record can be updated.
